Are you a knitter who is crazy for color but you just don’t know where to start to develop your color confidence? Do you love to knit but always use the color shown in the pattern or book you are knitting from? Have you ventured off on your own only to feel confused and dissatisfied with your color experiments? If your answer is yes to any of these questions, then take a look at Kristin’s newest book Kristin Knits. In it she provides guidelines and ideas for working with color. You’ll find out how to develop your own color sense and become more fearless when knitting with color. You’ll discover where Kristin finds her own color muse as she leads you on a path to find yours.

Kristin Knits has projects for all levels of knitters – from beginner to advanced, teens and up. There are 27 projects in all, including hats, mittens, sweaters, socks, gloves, scarves, and an afghan. There’s even an easy mother/daughter pullover. Each project uses color inventively. Simple projects are transformed into works of art by a few easy-to-add touches. The distinctive and fun color range is evocative of textiles from the south of France and Kristin’s own collection of ethnic textiles. Most (although not all) of the projects in the book are knit in the round, and full instructions for working steeks are included.

Best of all, the designs are good projects for knitters just starting to take the color plunge. Many of the projects feature easy striping, fun borders, bobbles, colorful ribs, and Fair Isle knitting. The knitted fabric is further decorated by adding color with duplicate stitching, and you’ll learn six more easy embroidery stitches to add interest to your completed knitting. Embroidery is fast and easy and can add a new dimension to all your knitted projects.

Colorful Stitchery was photographed in Kristin’s antique funky farmhouse. The hand-painted walls and her antique and ethnic textile collection provide a rich background for the stitched objects. The projects look country chic and trendy, but all are quick to do. In fact, many can be completed in an evening. Kristin also gives plenty of advice on choosing fabrics to stitch on, recycling old fabrics and blankets, felting, dyeing, transferring a design to fabric, and how to design your own individual stitched project. Stitchery, color, design, and creativity can become part of your lifestyle too!

Debbie Stoller, best-selling author of Stitch ‘n Bitch and editor-in-chief of Bust magazine says, “Both homey and hip, Kristin Nicholas’ embroidery projects will have you itchin’ to get stitchin’. Her friendly, clear directions for cross stitch to French knots and everything in between will help get you going, and her encouraging tone will inspire you to take your needle in new directions - your own.”

Carol Sheehan, editor-in-chief of Country Home magazine says, “Kristin Nicholas has taken all her exuberance for needlework and packed it into a colorful, informative and fun book that gives a beginner like me the inspiration and instruction to start stitching up a storm.”

Colorful Stitchery has been featured in The Seattle Times, Kansas City Star, Orange County Register, The Women’s Times (Northampton, MA), Greenfield Recorder, NY Newsday, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and Bradenton (FL) Herald, as well as glossy magazines including Vogue Knitting, Interweave Knits, Vogue Patterns, and Embellish. Knitting for Baby was co-authored with Melanie Falick. It is a complete "how-to" book for the beginning or experienced knitter. Kristin designed all of the projects in this book, including knits for babies and adults, toys, and home decor, in addition to painting all 64 technical "how to knit" illustrations.

Melanie and Kristin's children were born a month apart. The authors were inspired by their babies to collaborate on this collection of modern heirlooms. Melanie's words walk the novice (or lapsed) knitter through the basic cast-on, knit stitch, finishing, cabling, and other techniques. Kristin's colorful fresco-inspired technical illustrations clearly show the knitter how to make the projects that she designed.

The babies were sensitively photographed by Ross Whitaker, acclaimed child photographer. Below are some sample photos and illustrations from this wonderful book.

Knitting the New Classics

Knitting the New Classics Cover

Knitting the New Classics was the first book Kristin authored while working as Creative Director for Classic Elite Yarns. It is a collection of 60 sweater designs for men, women, and children, 25 of which Kristin designed herself. The rest of the designs are by well-known knitwear designers, including Cathy Payson, Linda Pratt, Susan Mills, Sally Lee, Norah Gaughan, Stephanie Gildersleeve, Julie Hoff, Deborah Newton, Michele Rose, and Kathy Zimmerman. Kristin was lucky enough to work with a talented group of in-house and freelance designers to develop her handknitting collections during her 16 years with Classic Elite Yarns.

This is a well-rounded collection of timeless sweater designs that will hold their own as the years go by. Below are a few of Kristin's favorites from her own designs. To order from Amazon.com, click Here.
